How to Create Food Plots

Food plots are used by hunters to draw deer to a property or other area. Supplemental deer food plots provide nutrition for deer during barren winter months. Deer plots can steer deer out of gardens and flower beds, which is beneficial because deer will feed in garden areas and damage them. Different plants are used in deer plots based on the soil composition in that location. In general, grains and greens like clover are used.

Instructions

    • 1

Take a soil sample and send it to the local extension office to determine what type of fertilizer to use. Mention what types of crops you wish to plant in a note with the sample.

    • 2

Remove weeds and vegetation from the plot area, and in the fall use a weed killer. A one-acre plot located near deer paths works well.

    • 3

Plow fertilizer into the land after vegetation is removed and recommendations from the extension office are received.

    • 4

Sow seeds according to the temperate zone for your area and the crop. Plant small seeds near the surface and larger seeds a little deeper. Some options include rye, wheat, corn, soybeans and specialty seed mixes.

    • 5

Use a cultipacker to make sure seeds are at the right depth. Water with a garden hose if it doesn't rain within a few days.
