Check the average last frost in your region. Plan to buy, or have your sod delivered, after this date.
Pick up any rocks and debris from the surface that you are planting. Use a rake to break up any clumps of dirt and to level the ground.
Amend the soil using a fertilizer that is high in phosphorus. If this is not available, use a complete fertilizer that includes potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus.
Wet the soil before you apply the sod. This is particularly important if you live in a dry climate. If the soil is already moist you don't need to add additional water.
Lay the sod along one edge of the lawn. You will be using either rolled sod or squares. If it is rolled, unroll it along the the side and use an edger to cut the end flush with the far edge of the lawn. If you are using squares, place them in a line next to one another; lay each square flush to each other with no pieces overlapping. Overlapping pieces will not be able to root.
Water the sod thoroughly, soaking it with six to eight inches of water. Keep the sod moist by watering daily for the first seven to 10 days. After that water it weekly or as needed.
