Cool-season grasses, the type grown in Vermont, do best when planted in the spring or fall. Aim for late April through May, once the danger of frost has passed, or late August to early September, before the first frost sets back in.
There are grasses that grow well in Vermont. Perennial ryegrass germinates in four to five days, Kentucky bluegrass is winter hardy, and fine fescue grass can grow in shade or drought. Mix the three together for the thickest lawn.
For best results, use a hand or mechanical spreader to sow grass seed, depending on the size of your lawn. Use 4 lbs. of seed per 1,000 square feet.
