The Best Time to Seed Kentucky Bluegrass

Prospering in cool weather and moist soil, Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) grows well in cool summer regions. Root growth ceases once soil temperatures exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Sow seed in late summer to allow the grass to develop a healthy root system.
  1. Time Frame

    • Seeding with Kentucky bluegrass is best undertaken from mid-August to mid-September, but certainly before October 15, according to Jimmy C. Henning and Howell N. Wheaton of the University of Missouri.

    Seeding Rate

    • Apply 20 to 60 lbs. of tiny Kentucky bluegrass seed per acre, or 2 to 3 lbs. per 1,000 square feet. Use clean seed, which means it is free of undesirable grass and weed species seeds and debris.

    Follow-Up Care

    • Keep the soil evenly moist, applying 1 inch of water to supplement rainfall as needed. Also, do not mow the grass until it is at least 2 inches tall, but before it reaches 3 inches tall. Use slow-release nitrogen fertilizer lightly to sustain plants through the first fall and winter.
