Information on Planting Grass

There are a few ways to plant grass, including sowing seed, laying sod and hiring a hydroseeding contractor. Seeding a lawn is the cheapest way.
  1. Preparation

    • Prepare the yard before planting grass. Loosen the soil 4- to 6-inches deep to assist in root spread and development. Rake the areas until leveled and pick up the debris.

    Planting Times

    • Plant cool-season grass seeds at the beginning of fall or spring avoiding cold, frost and summer heat. Sow warm-season grass seed at the beginning of summer.

    Considerations

    • Paying attention to grass seed during the germination process improves its growth. It needs to be kept moist until it germinates. Spreading straw over the seeds holds them in place and retains moisture.
