When to Seed a New Tall Fescue Lawn in Nebraska

Two different times of year are good for sowing tall fescue grass seed to either repair a lawn or start anew in Nebraska. Tall fescue grass is a cool-season grass and falters in hot temperatures and dry soils.
  1. Time Frame

    • To sprinkle seed across an existing lawn with lots of bald spots, sow tall fescue seeds anytime between April 15 to June 15. For best new lawn establishment, seed tall fescue from Aug. 20 to Sept. 20.

    Application Rate

    • Use a tall fescue seed blend with improved cultivar types. Apply 4 to 6 pounds of seed per 1,000-square-foot area. Less seed is needed when overseeding thin areas of lawn as compared to a bare soil for new lawn creation.

    Insight

    • The University of Nebraska suggests including a lawn-starter fertilizer product at sowing time at a rate of 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. If sowing in spring, consider applying siduron to deter crabgrass weeds.
