The Best Grass Seed for a Beautiful Lawn

The best grass seed depends on your region, environmental conditions and intended use. The two categories of grass -- warm season and cool season -- grow best in varying regions of the country based on climate.
  1. Time Frame

    • Germination time depends on the type of grass seed you plant. Rye grass germinates the fastest, in as little as five days, and fescues can sprout in one week. Bentgrass and bermudagrass take at least 10 days, whereas bluegrass takes twice as long. Centipede and bufalograss take two to three weeks.

    Potential

    • Use a grass seed mix to benefit from the best qualities of each type of seed. A combination of the species makes the seed adaptable to varying site conditions. Choose grasses that are known to grow in your particular region, climate and conditions.

    Considerations

    • Use grass seed that has a germination rate of 90 to 95 percent for best results. The information is found on the label. Many mixtures have an 80-percent rate. The testing is done in a laboratory.
