What Time of Year Should One Broadcast Grass Seed?

Timing is an important factor when planting grass seed because the seed needs the correct amount of light, warmth, moisture and oxygen to germinate. Under the optimal conditions, grass seed will grow strong roots and create a lush, thick lawn.
  1. Time Frame

    • The timing of seeding a lawn depends on the type of grass you plant. Plant cool-season grass in northern states where there are four distinct seasons. April or mid-August to mid-September are the best sowing times for cool-season grasses. If you live in the southern states, sow warm-season grass seed in late spring or early summer.

    Considerations

    • Use the soil temperature as a guide to when you should broadcast grass seed. Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends planting warm-season grass seed in a soil temperature between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, whereas cool-season grass should be sown in a soil temperature of 50 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Warning

    • It is possible to broadcast grass seed closer to times of expected temperature spikes or drops, but there is an increased chance some or most of the seed will die before germination.
