When to Plant Fescue in North Georgia?

If you live in North Georgia, you can choose among many varieties of grass for your lawn. Fescue is one variety that the University of Georgia recommends for this region. Learn to plant yours at the right time for a healthy lawn.
  1. Types

    • Of the two major types of fescue -- fine fescue and tall fescue -- the latter is more commonly grown in North Georgia. Tall fescue is a cool-season bunch grass that is used both as a turf for lawns and as pasture grass. Like other cool-season grasses, it has two annual growing cycles: spring and fall.

    Time Frame

    • Tall fescue should be planted during its fall growing period, sometime during fall. September, October or early November are all acceptable, but October is the best month. Fescue planted too soon may have problems with heat stress and disease, while fescue planted too late will be vulnerable to cold weather.

    Considerations

    • In some parts of the country, tall fescue can be planted in spring, but this is not recommended in Georgia. According to the University of Georgia, fescue planted in spring does not have enough time to establish a strong root system to withstand the hot Georgia summer.
