When to Sod Zoysia in Georgia?

Zoysia grass is a warm-season turfgrass suitable for all parts of the Peach State, but better south of Atlanta. It's wear-tolerant and relatively low maintenance across the year. Drawbacks include slow establishment and zoysia does become sandy-brown in the cool winter months.
  1. Time Frame

    • If the soil is not frozen or muddy, zoysia sod can be laid any time of year in Georgia. However, the University of Georgia notes that more problems arise if sod is laid from November to March. The ideal time frame is May and June when soil and air temperatures are warm and rainstorms still occur regularly.

    Types

    • Multiple varieties of zoysia grass are sold and used in Georgia. Emerald and Meyer are common but aren't overly dense and remain susceptible to fungal problems like rust. El Toro is faster growing and displays good resistance to rust.

    Establishment

    • Till in 25 lbs. of 5-10-15 fertilizer per 1,000 square feet into the 4 to 6 inches of topsoil and thoroughly wet the soil prior to laying sod. Once placed, use a weighted roller to contact sod roots to soil. Apply 1/4 inch of water daily onto the zoysia until the sod sections become well-rooted.
