St. Augustine grass is perfectly suited for hot and humid Florida weather conditions. Most varieties of this popular grass thrive in sunny or shady conditions. In particular, Jade, Delmar and Bitterblue varieties are recommended for shaded Florida lawns.
Zoysia grass is an alternative choice for a shaded lawn. Although it is not quite as shade-tolerant as St. Augustine grass, it is a lower-maintenance grass that can adapt to a wide variety of soils. Consequently, it may be a better choice for your yard.
Do not plant grass, even if it is shade-tolerant, in an area that receives less than three hours of sunlight every day. In those locations, consider alternate groundcovers, such as mondo grass or lilyturf. Both have a grass-like appearance and will thrive in dense shade.
