Planting Rates of Timothy Grass Seed

Timothy grass is a perennial bunch grass that is often used as cattle feed and hay for horses. It provides good nutrition and is often fed to domestic pets such as guinea pigs and rabbits. Timothy has a shallow root system and spreads easily.
  1. Rate

    • Pure stands need a planting rate of 4 to 6 lbs. per acre. If you are using a seed mixture, you can reduce it to 2 to 4 lbs. per acre. Sow the seed 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep for best germination.

    Considerations

    • If you sow Timothy grass at a lower seeding rate, the grass will grow to be weedy and thin. If you disperse too much seed, the cost of establishment is too high and the seed can compete for nutrients.

    Time Frame

    • Timothy grass seed grows best if planted in the spring or the fall. The University of Missouri Extension suggests sowing it between Aug. 20 and Oct. 1. If you choose to plant in the spring, February or March are the best months.
