Hardscape Pattern Description

"Hardscape" is a landscaping design term used to refer to the use of hard materials, such as stone and brick, to create walkways, fencing and seating areas in a yard. Numerous pattern options are available for designing a hardscape, and these patterns can range in simplicity or intricacy.
  1. Elegance

    • Traditional and streamlined patterns typically having elements of strict order and careful placement can make a hardscape feel elegant.

    Rustic Design

    • More natural, or rustic, hardscape patterns use stone placement that is random and variegated to mimic how stones may fall in a natural setting. These patterns are good for wooded and more casual landscapes.

    Whimsical Touches

    • To create a whimsical and artistic feel, you can use hardscaping patterns that include various orderly and staggered patterns in the same landscape.

    Materials

    • Many materials can be used in both orderly and variegated patterns, depending on the style of hardscape you want and the atmosphere you want to create. Concrete pavers can be place in a straight traditional walkway or staggered around trees for a more rustic feel.

    Color

    • Landscaping experts at Mark of Excellence Remodeling, endorsed by HGTV, explain that color assortment in material choices can help create patterns in a hardscape. Materials can be chosen to all match and create an organized, elegant pattern, or they can be chosen in varying shades for a more rustic setting. Using colored tiles to create mosaic pictures in a walkway or courtyard can also add drama and an artistic flair to an area.
