Zoysia Installation

Zoysia is a hardy variety of grass that commonly serves as a turf grass for golf courses and recreational fields. Many homeowners choose to install zoysia as sod, rather than planting it with seeds. After you bring your zoysia sod home, install it immediately to prevent drying. When installing zoysia on a particularly hot day, place the sod pieces in shade and keep them damp while you work with a few pieces at a time.

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Remove stones and weeds from the area. Till the soil, going to a depth of 6 inches.

    • 2

Apply a 1-inch layer of compost to the entire area.

    • 3

Add 20 lbs. of 5-10-15 fertilizer for each 1,000 square feet.

    • 4

Rake the soil, distributing it evenly across the area to avoid dips and ridges.

    • 5

Dampen the soil with about ½ inch of water the night before installing the zoysia sod.

    Installation

    • 6

Lay the sod, beginning with the longest edge of the lawn. Fit each piece of sod tightly to the next. If necessary, trim the sod pieces to fit them around trees or other obstacles.

    • 7

Lay the sod in the next row in a staggered fashion, so the seams from the previous row are not aligned with the next row.

    • 8

Water the entire area within 30 minutes of installation. Give the zoysia about 1 to 2 inches of water.

    • 9

Run a water-filled roller over the entire lawn to tamp the sod down tightly and encourage rooting.
