Sod planted in the fall must establish its roots before the first winter frost. Determine when the first frost usually occurs, and plant the sod no later than one month before the first frost.
If you plant your sod later than the recommended time, the sod won't have time to develop an extensive root system. This means you must water the sod during the winter or it will dry out.
If you do water the sod in the winter, water only when the seepage can penetrate the sod and soil. Water every two or three weeks during a dry winter. This prevents puddles from turning to ice on the surface.
