How to Start Zoysia Plugs

Zoysia is a medium-bladed, bright green turf grass frequently used in lawns throughout the United States. The grass grows quickly and forms a dense, thick lawn that stands up well to traffic, is relatively disease- and drought-resistant, and is easy to maintain. The rapid growth rate and toughness of zoysia make it an excellent choice for planting as plugs, which are similar to sod but in sections usually only a few inches across. When the plugs are inserted into the soil at regular intervals, the grass will grow and eventually fill in to form a solid and lush lawn.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area you want to plant zoysia plugs in to determine how many plugs you will need to purchase. An average density of plugs within an area is every 12 to 18 inches. Plant plugs closer for the lawn to fill in more rapidly. Map out a diagonal checkerboard pattern in the area for the plugs.

    • 2

Treat the area with a broad-spectrum herbicide to kill any existing grass or weeds. After all grass or weeds are completely dead, till the soil to a depth of from 4 to 5 inches, then rake the soil to smooth and grade it, as needed.

    • 3

Water the area to be plugged thoroughly so the soil is moist. Dig holes with the plugger tool that are a little larger than the root ball of each plug.

    • 4

Place a measure of plug starter fertilizer into each hole in the amount recommended by the manufacturer.

    • 5

Place each plug in a hole. Tamp the soil around the root ball of the plug to ensure good contact between the roots and the soil. Continue until all plugs are planted.

    • 6

Water the planted plugs again. Water every day to keep the soil damp until the plugs are well-established and spreading, usually in about four weeks. Mow the lawn at this time.
