Grass Seed & Fertilizer Combination

Sowing grass seed and fertilizer are usually separate processes. A starter fertilizer goes down first, then the seed, to help it germinate faster. There are some products on the market, however, that combine grass seed and fertilizer.
  1. Significance

    • Combination seed and fertilizer products contain a growing material that retains water and protects the grass seed. The nutrients feed the seed to help it develop a strong root system.

    Considerations

    • There is no need to add an additional fertilizer because the combination products contain a continuous-release formula. The blends typically contain nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to promote vigorous growth.

    Types

    • Grass seed and fertilizer products use varying types of grass seed, such as Bermudagrass. A mixture of more than one kind will ensure that you benefit from the best qualities of each seed type. Make sure the blend is a type of seed that grows well in your region.
