Can I Plant Grass Seed in December?

Grass seed grows best when planted in the spring or fall. Working around times of expected frost gives the seed sufficient time to develop roots during milder weather. However, if you can't plant during these times, late fall planting is possible.
  1. Time Frame

    • You can sow grass seed in the late fall or early winter, but the seed will stay dormant until the following spring. This type of dormant seeding works best if there will be snow covering the seeds to protect them and keep them in place.

    Considerations

    • The dates for dormant seeding vary depending on your region. In northern Ohio, for example, seeds planted after November 15 will not come up until the spring. In the southern part of the state, anything planted after December 1 will delay sprouting.

    Benefits

    • The latest recommended time to sow grass seed is typically October. This gives the seed enough time to germinate and grow stronger roots before winter sets in.
