Bermudagrass Planting Dates in Louisiana

In Louisiana, mild winters and long, hot and humid summers make bermudagrass a good turfgrass choice, especially if you walk and play a lot on your lawn. Fast growing and tolerant of drought, it looks much better if irrigated and given nitrogen and is rather high-maintenance.
  1. Time Frame

    • As a warm-season grass, bermudagrass leaves winter dormancy and increases its growth rate once soil temperatures warm above 70 degrees Fahrenheit. According to Louisiana State University, the ideal time to establish bermudagrass from seed, sprigs/plugs or sod is from March 1 to June 1.

    Types

    • Common bermudagrass varieties are able to be grown from seed or as sprigs and sod. Examples include Sahara, Sunstar, Princess 77, Cheyenne and Jackpot. Hybrid bermudagrass varieties are available only as sprigs or sod, including Tifway (419), TifSport, GN-1, Tifgreen, Tifdwarf and Tifeagle.

    Considerations

    • If you are sowing bermudagrass seed, you may sow the seed anytime during the warm growing season months as long as you keep the soil evenly moist. Dry soil from June to August will kill emerging sprouts and slow the establishment of grass heading into the fall.
