Annual rye grass is a cool-season, bunching annual grass that is similar to perennial rye grass. Originally from Europe, it grows to a height of about 3 feet with smooth, shiny dark green leaves.
Late summer to early fall is generally the time to plant annual rye grass, and you can plant any time between late August and early October in most areas.
Annual rye grass is more commonly used as a forage crop for winter and spring grazing than on lawns. Perennial rye grass is generally a better choice as a turf grass, although annual rye grass can be used to over-seed a warm-season lawn in southern areas, helping it stay green through winter.
