How to Plant Canada Grass

If you want to create a new lawn, use Canada grass, a turfgrass available in many garden center retail outlets. Canada grass is made up of Kentucky bluegrass, creeping red fescue, annual ryegrass and a small percentage of weed seed, other crop seed and inert matter. Since Canada grass is a turfgrass, plant it like any other turfgrass to create a new lawn.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all debris from the area before planting the Canada grass seed. Pick up rocks, sticks or pebbles.

    • 2

Rake the top 2 to 3 inches of topsoil to loosen it. Break up large clumps of soil. If needed, use the rake to level the area as much as possible.

    • 3

Spread the Canada grass seed over the area by hand. Apply the seeds evenly over the entire surface area. Do not place the seeds too close to each other, ensuring each seed has enough nutrients and room to grow. A good rule of thumb: approximately 16 seeds per square inch.

    • 4

Rake the area lightly to cover the seeds with soil. No more than 1/4 inch of soil is necessary to cover the seeds.

    • 5

Water the area several times a day to ensure the soil remains moist to encourage germination.
