Zoysia grass grows well in a wide array of soils, including clay, loam and sand. Soil pH can be acidic or alkaline. The only caveat is zoysia grass does not tolerate soils that drain poorly.
The slow growth rate of zoysia grass makes initial proper bed preparation important. Till the planting area to pulverize soil particles and then rake to smooth the area. Removing weeds prior to grass plug installation gives the grasses an advantage to establish better and create a pristine lawn.
Sprigs, not plugs, are the least expensive way to establish a zoysia grass lawn. Sprigs tend to create a faster rate of coverage with their spreading stolons. Regardless of material used, the soil must remain evenly moist for the grass plants to prosper and establish well.
