St. Augustine grass thrives in the mild winter temperatures and high summer temperatures of Southern California. Since it is native to the coastal regions of the Gulf of Mexico, the West Indies and Western Africa, it does especially well along the Southern California coastal areas. St. Augustine is not drought tolerant and it must be irrigated in the inland areas of Southern California.
Bermudagrass thrives in the Southern California bright light and high heat. It seeds profusely and its toughness makes it a good choice for lawns that get a lot of wear and tear from children and pets. Bermudagrass grows on sports fields, lawns, parks, golf courses and other utility turfs in Southern California. It remains green all year.
For an ornamental no-mow, low-water landscape, plant buffalograss seed. This meadow grass requires minimal maintenance, low water and has a high tolerance for drought. It grows 4 to 8 inches tall and thrives in almost the whole state of California, but especially the desert regions of Southern California. It's tough when it comes to traffic.
