The Best Time to Seed a Lawn After Autumn

One of the most important aspects of being successful when seeding a lawn is timing. Seed your lawn at the right time and the rest of the process is easy.
  1. Timing

    • The ideal time to plant cool-season grasses, such as Kentucky bluegrass, is late summer into early fall. The second best time to plant these grasses is in early spring, as soon as the ground thaws. Warm-season grasses should be planted in the spring.

    Considerations

    • If you plant in the spring, don't wait too long into the season. The grass needs to become established before the weather heats up.

    Tips

    • Keep the soil moist after planting the grass seed. The bed shouldn't be soggy, just moist. This may mean that on warm days you'll be watering two or three times.
