Zoysia grass is a turf variety that spreads across the yard through rhizome roots. This type of spreading root system creates a durable lawn that withstands heavy foot traffic.
Texas A&M University recommends planting Zoysia grass plugs in early spring, once there is no danger of frost. Prepare the planting area approximately one month prior to the estimated planting date to give amendments time to incorporate into the soil.
Zoysia grass actively grows and spreads from spring through fall, generally May through September. Avoid planting late in the growing season to give the plugs enough time to establish before the grass goes dormant in winter.
Zoysia grass set at a distance of 6 to 12 inches apart will require two growing seasons to spread and create a full lawn. Grass and weeds that enter the lawn during this time may inhibit growth and create a longer establishment rate. Monitor the lawn area after the spring plant so you can remove weeds as they appear.
