How to Landscape With Sod Cuttings

Landscaping doesn't just include shrubs, flowers and trees. It also includes the yard area. If you want to add grass fairly quickly to your landscaping, consider installing sod strips. Sod comes in rolled cuttings that, when laid out, give your landscaping the appearance of an established lawn that is lush and green. Installation is not difficult and can be done in a day or so depending on the size of the property.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray paint around the landscape area where you want to install sod cuttings.

    • 2

Dig out the space with a flat-edged shovel. The sod has its own dirt, so you need to dig down a couple of inches so that it will sit even with the rest of the lawn. This also helps you remove any debris.

    • 3

Lay down the first strip of cut sod along the edge of the yard. Add more to the end of the first strip so that they are right next to each other. Continue until you finish the first row.

    • 4

Tap wooden pegs into the corners of each cut strip to hold them to the ground.

    • 5

Start a second row next to the first. Cut the first strip in the row in half before laying it down. Use a knife to make the cut. This is to ensure that the seams of the first row do not line up with the seams of the second. Staggering the seams helps prevent obvious lines in the yard landscape.

    • 6

Add more rows, staggering the seams as you continue and putting pegs in the corners to hold them down.

    • 7

Cut smaller pieces or shapes to fit unusual edges when required to go along the sides of the yard or where the lawn meets natural areas.

    • 8

Water the lawn after installation until the ground below the sod is damp to a depth of at least 1 inch. Water daily for the first couple of weeks to help the roots establish. Then cut back to twice a week.
