How to Plant Creeping Red Fescue

Creeping red fescue grows best in cool climates with sandy soils, such as coastal areas. The creeping red fescue likes acidic soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5 but it can handle even more acidic soil as well. This grass grows well in shaded areas and makes a good turf lawn for homes and golf courses. Planting creeping red fescue from seed either alone or mixed with other grass seed will give you a full lawn in no time.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull any weeds from the soil and rake up the large rocks. Break up clumps of soil with the rake.

    • 2

Add 2 to 3 inches of compost to the soil and work it into the ground to about 6 to 8 inches.

    • 3

Broadcast 2 lbs. of creeping red fescue seed per 1,000 square feet of lawn you want to grow. Sprinkle about 30 to 40 seeds per square foot. Sprinkle 1 lb. of 10-10-10 fertilizer over the seeds for every 1,000 square feet.

    • 4

Sprinkle a 1/4-inch layer of soil over the seeds. Use a roller to press the seeds into the soil. Roll over the seeds with the roller to cover the entire lawn.

    • 5

Water the planted creeping red fescue for five minutes. Keep the soil moist until the grass sprouts.
