How to Reseed and Fertilize a Lawn

Sometimes a lawn becomes patchy due to poor irrigation or heavy foot traffic. If your lawn is not living up to your expectations, a refertilization and reseeding project may be the best option. Once reseeded, the bare spots can join a full lawn that is green, healthy and manageable. Thankfully, for those born without a green thumb, a reseeding job is not a very difficult task. With the proper tools and execution, you can restore the grandeur of your lawn and yard.

Instructions

    • 1

Rake the bare spots in the lawn to remove dead grass and debris.

    • 2

Aerate the soil with a pitchfork. Dig down at least 1 inch to turn the soil over.

    • 3

Moisten the soil with a garden hose so that it's slightly damp.

    • 4

Incorporate a fertilizer into the soil with the pitchfork.

    • 5

Spread new grass seed into the soil. Use a grass seed appropriate for the climate. Approximately eight seeds every square inch is a reasonable amount.

    • 6

Moisten the soil again as soon as you seed.

    • 7

Keep the newly fertilized and seeded spots moist. Spraying the seeds three times a day with a mist of water is appropriate until the grass reaches approximately 1 inch in height.

    • 8

Water the new grass once a week until it attains a height of 4 inches.
