How to Plant an Arbutus

An arbutus is a flowering plant native to the Mediterranean, western Europe and sections of North America. The arbutus, also known as madrone, is easily identified as a small tree with red berries and a similarly colored bark. The tree's bark and leaves were used in herbal medicines by the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify a location in your yard that receives maximum sunlight throughout the day. An arbutus is best suited for constant sunlight.

    • 2

Choose a soil composition that drains water easily. The arbutus plant requires soils with high evaporation rates. Sloped areas containing gravel are ideal spots for planting.

    • 3

Dig a hole 3 to 5 inches deep, then moisten the soil.

    • 4

Place the arbutus seed into the hole and cover with topsoil.

    • 5

Water the arbutus seed daily until it sprouts. Once sprouted, you can water the arbutus two to three times a week.
