How to Store Bean Seeds & for How Long

You can save and then eat bean seeds from any plant, but to replant the seeds, you need to gather them from heirloom and open-pollinated bean plants. Save the largest ones from your healthiest plants. The average gardener has many more beans than she needs. This makes sacrificing a few for storage an easy task. You can tell that a bean is ready to be put into storage if it rattles inside the pod.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure that the bean is fully mature before you store it. They will eventually dry on the vine if you leave them there. You can wait until the end of the season to pick these beans and store them. The pods will turn brown.

    • 2

Pull the pods from the plant.

    • 3

Open the pod and remove the seeds.

    • 4

Place the beans on a plate and let them set for a day.

    • 5

Put beans into a covered container and store them in a cool, dry and dark area. You can store the beans for three to five years if they are properly sealed from moisture.
