How to Measure Your Yard for Sod

If you have a lawn that has fallen into a state of disrepair and is beyond salvaging or a newly built home without landscaping, sod grass is the quickest way to get a good-looking lawn. Sod is simply a lawn grown with healthy grass and then taken up in sections with a machine called a sod cutter. The machine runs a reciprocating blade into the soil and shears the grass from the top soil. It is cut into rectangular sections, about 2 feet wide by 5 feet long, though dimensions can vary by supplier or type of grass.

  Measure the width and depth of your yard to find the square-footage. Multiply the number of feet side-to-side by the number of feet front-to-back. For instance, if your front yard were 40 feet wide and 30 feet deep, it would be 1,200 square feet.

  Measure any additional spaces that require sod by using the same method. As an example, if your backyard is 40 feet wide by 40 feet deep, the square-footage is 40 times 40, or 1,600 square feet.

  Combine the square-footage of all areas to be covered with sod. Using the above examples of 1,200 square feet and 1,600 square feet, the total space would be 2,800 square feet.

  Calculate the amount of sod needed to fill the square-footage. Some suppliers cut sod into 2-foot-by-5-foot rectangles, but you should confirm the size of the pieces with the supplier you have chosen. Convert the sod dimensions to square feet by multiplying the length and width, which would be 10 square feet if the pieces were 2 by 5 feet. Divide the square-footage of your lawn space by the square-footage of the sod. In this example, that is 2,800 square feet divided by 10 square feet, resulting in 280 sections of 2-foot-by-5-foot sections of sod.
