The ideal height for purple martin houses is between 12 to 20 feet. Martins prefer these houses in an open area away from tall trees but close to people. Martins associate being close to humans with fewer predators, and prefer houses mounted within 40 to 120 feet from buildings.
Martins prefer houses higher than any foliage with 40 to 60 feet from it. If there is nearby tree that is 15 feet tall, the martin house needs to be at least 16 feet high. If necessary, the martin house can be placed up to 30 feet tall to adjust for high trees.
Martins will colonize houses mounted as low as 6 feet, but it's not the safest situation since the houses are more at risk from predators. Instead of mounting the house on a short permanent pole, put the house on a telescoping pole that can be lowered and raised as necessary.
A predator guard is necessary to protect the nests regardless of how tall they are. Raccoons and rat snakes can climb metal poles and even get past metal collars. Install a net trap and a predator guard that sticks out at least 30 inches.
