How to Make a 3D Scarecrow

Scarecrows stem from a functional need of farmers who first used the characters to ward off pesky crows in their vegetable garden. However, you do not have to have a garden to have a scarecrow; you can stake up one as an addition to your outdoor fall décor. You can make a 3D scarecrow using items found in your closet and woodpile.

  • 36-inch wooden stick

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a long-sleeve flannel shirt on a flat surface. Insert a 36-inch wooden stick inside the shirt and through the sleeves.

    • 2

Wrap duct tape around the cuff of the left sleeve to secure the stick into place. Stuff handfuls of loose straw into the sleeve, all the way to the taped cuff, filling the sleeve until it puffs up. Tape the cuff on the other sleeve to the stick and fill it with straw as well.

    • 3

Insert a 60-inch wooden stick up through the neck of the flannel shirt so that the top end is sticking out of the collar 6 inches. Button up the shirt completely.

    • 4

Duct tape the shirt collar to the stick to hold the shirt in place. Stuff the cavity of the shirt with straw to puff out the chest and stomach. Gather the bottom of the shirt and press it around the stick. Wrap duct tape around the bottom of the shirt to hold it to the stick.

    • 5

Slide a pair of blue jean coveralls over the bottom end of the stick, with the stick inside one of the pants legs. Button the straps of the coveralls over the shirt shoulders as if you were putting the coveralls on a person. Stuff the legs of the coveralls and wrap duct tape around the bottom of the legs to hold the straw in the jeans.

    • 6

Stuff a white plastic shopping bag with straw. Tie the base to secure the bag. Draw a face on the front side of the bag with a black permanent marker. Place the bag in front of the stick, just above the shirt collar, and use duct tape to secure the bag to the stick.

    • 7

Position a straw hat on top of the scarecrow's head, using duct tape to hold the hat on the bag.
