Keep above-ground fountains on a level, sound surface, such as concrete.
Check the fountain's water level regularly to ensure it is high enough and add more water when necessary. Water levels left to decline can expose the running water pump to air. Water pumps running dry will break down.
Pull out any loose debris, such as leaves and twigs, with a pond skimmer to keep debris from eventually being sucked into the pump.
Pump out or drain the water from the fountain every one to three months to clean out algae, mineral and other organic matter.
Create a solution of 1 part white vinegar and 1 part water.
Remove any rocks or small ornaments from inside the fountain. Soak the rocks and ornaments in the vinegar solution. Scrub the concrete walls of the fountain with the solution then rinse with fresh water. For tough, hard-to-remove stains, employ an eco-friendly concrete cleaner.
Remove the pump and take off the pump cover. Remove any loose debris stuck inside. Remove the filter, tubing and any other removable parts from the pump. Soak the pump parts in the vinegar solution. Swish the filter around to dislodge any stuck-on detritus. Wipe downed loosened algae and other grime from the pump with a cloth.
Remove the water. Water left to freeze and thaw in the fountain can damage the concrete.
Take the pump from the fountain and store it indoors.
Fill the bowl of the fountain with burlap. Cover the opening of the fountain with plastic or some other type of water-shedding cover.
