How to Build a Corn Cob Spinner for Squirrels

When squirrels climb in your birdfeeders, they not only eat all the bird's food, but they also make a mess with the seed. Squirrel-proof birdfeeders are effective for keeping squirrels out; however, offering the squirrels a corncob spinning feeder is another option. The spinners offer the squirrels a tasty treat, keeping them out of the birdfeeder. When the squirrels step on the feeder, it spins around like a Ferris wheel. Making your own corncob spinner requires little more than some boards and nails.

Things You'll Need

  • Six 3-inch nails

  • Hammer
  • Drill
  • 3-inch bolt

Instructions

    • 1

Insert one 3-inch nail in each end of the 1-by-2-inch boards. Drill a pilot hole slightly smaller than the diameter of the nail, to keep the board from splitting. Hammer the nail in until half the nail remains exposed, to allow a place to attach the corncobs.

    • 2

Create an X shape out the two boards. Drill through the center of the X to make a hole that goes through both boards. Secure the two boards together by inserting a 3-inch bolt through the hole and securing it with a nut. Use a wrench to tighten the nut.

    • 3

Use pliers to bend a metal L bracket into a 12-inch by 12-inch by 2-inch C shape to create an attachment for the feeder.

    • 4

Attach the 12-inch side that is parallel to the 2-inch side to a tree using 3-inch nails. Choose a tree with a straight trunk to prevent injury to the squirrels when the spinner spins.

    • 5

Attach the X to the 2-inch side of the bracket by inserting the bolt in the X into the hole in the 2-inch side. Attach a nut to the other side of the bolt and tighten it to secure. You want the nut tight enough to keep the X secure, but still allow it to spin.

Hammer a nail through the end of four dried corncobs and remove the nails to create a hole. Attach the four corncobs to the four nails in the X, pressing the nails in the X through the holes in the cob.
