Instructions

    • 1

Determine the width of the stone path you want to build. The type of stone you choose to use may determine your decision on width.

    • 2

Dig out the soil approximately 6 or 7 inches inside the path with a shovel. This will keep tree roots and thawing or freezing water from interfering with your pathway.

    • 3

Fill the newly dug pathway with an even layer of crushed gravel. Pack the stone down by walking on it several times or by using a hand tamp.

    • 4

Measure with a tape measure and install a weed control filter fabric over the crushed stone. This will keep weeds from eventually creeping up between the stones.

    • 5

Water the area with a garden hose. Let it sit over night to ensure all of the water has ample time to drain from the area. This will remove all of the air pockets from the base.

    • 6

Lay your stones on the pathway. Use smaller stones inside the path and larger ones on the outside. Make sure the stones are evenly spaced if you are leaving room between stones.

    • 7

Trim the stones to fit in the pathway with a mason's hammer or chisel. Use a rubber mallet to level the stones and set them in place.

    • 8

Sweep sand or stone dust into the spaces between the stones. This will better set the stones and keep them in place.

    • 9

Water the entire walkway gently once all of the stones are set.
