How to Refill a Fountain for Better Water Pressure

Fountains add beauty to a lawn or patio while providing a focal point for relaxation. Whether you own a large fountain with water-spouting sculpture, or a modest, battery-powered device that sits on a table or stands on the deck, the principles of water pressure are essentially the same. The pump must be submerged below the water line to work efficiently. Virtually all fountains are marked with a fill line so you know how much water to add. Pour only distilled water into your fountain to keep the pump running smoothly and free of mineral buildup.

Instructions

    • 1

      Turn on the fountain.

    • 2

Locate the fill mark on the inside of the fountain basin, or review the instructions for your particular model if the fill mark is faded or worn off.

    • 3

Pour distilled water into the basin while the fountain is running. Continue adding water until you reach the fill mark. If the pump gurgles, sputters or makes unusual noises, pour more water into the basin until the unit is pumping smoothly.
