How to Dig a Hole to Make a Concrete Mold

Concrete statues and planters in the garden help to add variety to the landscape, providing interesting elements and structure. In addition, concrete pavers can be made by the homeowner. While a wide variety of concrete art and planters are available on the market, they can be expensive. To save money, make your own planters and statuary. The most important requirement to pour a concrete planter is a mold, which can be pricey. These too can be made at home to save even more money.

Instructions

  1. Pavers

    • 1

Dig a hole in the ground the size of the item to be created.

    • 2

Scrape the bottom of the hole flat using a 2-by-4 board cut to the width of the paving stone. Remove any stones or roots.

    • 3

Ensure the bottom of the hole is flat by using a level. Press the sides of the hole smooth with the back of a trowel. The sides of the hole can be made any desired shape.

    • 4

Soak the sides and bottom of the earthen mold by filling it with water and allowing the mold to absorb it. Use the mold immediately after it drains so it doesn't dry out.

    Birdbath

    • 5

Dig a 2-by-2-foot hole, 1 foot deep in the dirt with a shovel.

    • 6

Fill the hole with sand and soak it with water.

    • 7

Shape the sand into the negative of the form you want to pour into the mold. One suggestion is to create a gently sloping bowl with a higher section in the middle and a lower area around the edges. When the molded item is inverted, you will have a bowl-shaped birdbath.

Smooth the surface of the sand and mist it to ensure that the sand is damp before pouring the concrete.
