How to Lubricate an External Pond Filter Cover

When planned and installed correctly, an outdoor pond can add a certain style and elegance to any yard. Whether the pond is built for koi, or simply as a habitat for aquatic plants and lilies, an outdoor pond can provide much enjoyment. Outdoor ponds require a filter system to keep water levels safe for plant life and fish. And outdoor pond filters need maintenance. Although pond filters are submersible, their covers need lubrication. Algae and mud can sometimes clog the hinges on filter covers, making it hard to open them when it is time for servicing.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift the pond filter out of the pond by its handle if it has one.

    • 2

Allow as much water as possible to drain out of the filter.

    • 3

Disconnect the power to the filter by turning the power button to the off position, or by shutting the filter off at the circuit breaker.

    • 4

Unlatch the snaps that hold the filter cover in place. Lift the filter cover either completely off or into the up position if the filter cover is hinged.

    • 5

Use a towel to dry the filter and cover off. Scrub the filter cover, and its seating on the filter rim, well with a scrub brush. If the filter cover is hinged, use an old toothbrush to scrub out muck and grime from the hinges. Rinse and towel dry again.

    • 6

Spray a small amount of a spray lubricant, such as WD-40, onto the cover and hinges if the cover is hinged. Wipe off any excess lubricant with the towel and then replace the filter cover.

    • 7

Turn the filter back on and set it back under water in the pond.
