Repurpose old items, and use them for new things in your garden or on your lawn. For example, find an old door at a thrift shop, and use it for the top of a picnic table. Find an old canoe, and fill it with planting soil to create a large planter. You can do the same thing with an old-fashioned claw-foot bathtub or an old wooden bucket. Use large tree stumps for stools by covering the tops of them with fabric or simply placing pillows covered with outdoor fabric on top of them.
Create a Zen garden in an area of your lawn. Remove the grass from an area, and border it with stones or a decorative grass. Fill the interior of the garden area with white sand. You can purchase sand from most garden and lawn stores. Place several large stones or Japanese-inspired statues in the zen garden. Add a large rake so that you can create designs in the sand while you relax.
Make your back porch, deck or a section of your garden or lawn into a bistro. Use your bistro area for entertaining friends or for having dinner and drinks with your family. Choose a small, simple table made of metal and add simple chairs. Select a long, narrow table if you plan to use the space to entertain. Cover the chair seats with outdoor furniture pillows in bright, bold colors or prints. Add a bright awning or umbrella over the area. Decorate with rustic-looking ceramic pots with large plants inside them.
Use a section of your fence or a wall of your home to create an outdoor gallery. Choose empty wooden or ceramic picture frames, old porcelain plates or platters and hang them securely on the wall. Choose sculptures and place them against the wall to complete your outdoor gallery.
