How to Clean Stained Concrete Statuary

Concrete statuary can become soiled and stained by bird droppings, debris blown by adverse weather, insects or mold or lichen growing on it. Incorrectly cleaning your statuary figures can cause cracking or bleaching, and it might cause the figures to continue to harbor mold or lichen in the crevices or indentations. Correctly cleaning the garden statuary keeps the concrete clean without bleaching it or cracking it. Additionally, it gets at dirt and stains in hard-to-reach areas.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a bucket with water, dropping a couple squirts of dish soap into the water.

    • 2

Rinse the statuary with a water hose, allowing the water to run or pour along the surface. Do not spray the statuary.

    • 3

Wet a sponge in the soapy water.

    • 4

Scrub the entire surface of the statue, using the wet sponge.

    • 5

Brush any residue off the surface with a soft-bristle brush as necessary. Use tight, circular movements, and focus on crevices and indentations.

    • 6

Rinse the statue with the water hose, allowing the surface to dry until the concrete regains its original dry color.

    • 7

Pour concrete sealant into a metal bowl.

    • 8

Wet a second sponge in the sealant.

    • 9

Wipe sealant across the surface with the sponge in consistent, straight strokes. Allow 24 hours for it to dry. The concrete will take on a darker gray, almost wet appearance, so you can see the areas you miss. The sealant protects the surface from bugs, vegetation and the sun's rays.
