How to Clean Moss Off Tombstones

Some people like the look of moss growing on a tombstone. It gives the tombstone an eerie and mysterious appearance, as if perhaps someone prestigious is buried there, but his family wants him to remain hidden from public view. Instructions

    • 1

Use a hard-bristled brush to dust off the entire tombstone. Scrub hard enough to take off most of the raised moss. If you don't have a brush handy, use a short-handled broom. Use a toothbrush to clean the lettering on the tombstone, cleaning each individual letter or number.

If you have the tombstone at home, use a garden hose with a spray attachment to hose off the tombstone. If the tombstone is in a cemetery and you don't have access to a garden hose, use a gallon bucket of water and a sponge to wipe down the tombstone. Begin at the top, and work your way down to the bottom, cleaning both the front and the back of the tombstone.

    • 3

Dump out the bucket of dirty water, and put in some fresh water. Mix 1/2 cup bleach with 1/2 cup laundry soap in the gallon bucket of clean water.

    • 4

Dip your sponge into the cleaning mixture, and clean the entire surface of the tombstone with the cleaning mix. Use the toothbrush again to clean the lettering.

    • 5

The bleach mixture will begin to get really dirty. Dump it out, and mix a fresh batch. Continue to clean the tombstone with this mixture until you have removed the greenish tint from the concrete, and the tombstone is clean to your satisfaction.

Dry the tombstone with a lint-free bath towel, or allow it to air dry.
