Instructions

    • 1

Select fabric for the garden flag.

    • 2

Cut out cardboard or paper templates for your applique or patchwork design.

    • 3

Cut out two 15-by-21-inch rectangles of fabric for an applique flag.

    • 4

Adhere applique pieces to the fabric with a spray adhesive.

    • 5

Stitch together the nylon pieces of your garden flag using a wide and short zigzag. Use a 1/4-inch seam allowance for fabrics other than nylon. Repeat for the second garden-flag panel.

    • 6

Place the two panels with the right sides together. Mark the panels 1 1/2 inches from one short side. Sew from one mark around three sides, stopping at the second mark.

    • 7

Turn the remaining 1 1/2 inches under half an inch and stitch to form a hem on each side. Sew partway up the short side with a 1/4-inch seam allowance, leaving an opening for turning.

    • 8

Turn the garden flag right-side out. Topstitch the opening on the short side closed.

    • 9

Sew a seam 1 1/4 inches from the hemmed edge of the flag to form a casing for the flagpole.
