How To Create Molds for Yard Statues

Instructions

    • 1

Mold your statue out of air-dry clay. Be creative. This is your statue, so put a personal touch on it. Make sure the statue is completely dry before attempting to make the mold.

    • 2

Cover the clay statue with a thin layer of petroleum jelly. You will be covering the clay statue with the plaster that will later become your mold, and this jelly will keep the liquid plaster from sticking to it.

    • 3

Make plaster to create your mold. Mix two parts plaster powder with one part water. The amount of liquid plaster needed will depend on the size of the statue you need to make the mold for. Stir the mixture until no more bubbles appear.

    • 4

Divide the clay statue symmetrically with a thin line of modeling clay. You will need to make a mold of each side of the original statue in order to make your final statue later.

    • 5

Brush a coat of plaster at least an inch thick on one side of the statue. Wait for it to dry completely before removing it. Pry it off carefully. Repeat on the other side of the statue.

    • 6

Connect both plaster molds with rubber bands. Make sure they are held tight enough together so that nothing can leak out.

    • 7

Drill a hole into your plaster mold, just large enough to pour inside the mold whatever medium you plan to make the final statue.
