How to Decorate a Premade Stepping Stone

Stepping stones can make a nice addition to your garden or lawn and help provide a walkway that prevents you from harming the surrounding grass. Although you can purchase most stepping stones at hardware or garden stores, the pre-decorated ones can be expensive. Even though there are kits available to make your own embellished stone, you can buy the stone itself and add your own decorations.

  1. Adding Your Creativity

You will need to wear gloves and put down old newspaper or towels to prevent messes before starting this project. After pouring 5 pounds of mortar mix in an old bucket, add water to create a thick paste. You will want to use enough mortar mix to cover as many stones as you have. Five pounds is enough for up to three stepping stones. You may need more mix if you have more stones to work with. (Mortar mix can be purchased at a hardware store for about $1.99). Stir the mixture with a spoon to get out any lumps, you will want as smooth a mixture as possible.

Using a spoon, place a layer of mortar mix about a half-inch tall on top of your stepping stones. Using the spatula to smooth the surface. Wipe away any excess mix that has seeped over the sides of the stone with an old towel.

Add decorations of your choice. These can include, but are not limited to: mosaic tiles, stones from fish tanks, keys, pebbles, shells, and personal items. Push the items into the mortar mix so the objects sink into the mixture. You might need to continue to clean around the sides with the towel after doing this. If you wish to write any slogans or phrases in the stones, let the mortar mix dry for 15 minutes before adding them.

Wait at least three days to make sure the stepping stones are dry before moving them. When you place the stones in the ground, be sure that you are letting them sink into the grass. They should be about a half-inch into the ground.
