How to Create a Rain Chain

Rain chains are a decorative way to carry the flow of water from your roof to the ground. As the water descends the chain it's more dispersed, so you avoid the problem of water gushing onto the ground and carving ditches or washing back on the foundation. Rain chains come in various styles, from simple links to elaborate cups. They provide a point of interest in any garden. The site and sound of water trickling down the chain is soothing and peaceful.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the distance from your gutter to the ground. This is how long your chain should be.

    • 2

Hook the binder rings together to form a long chain. Double the rings, using two at a time for each link of your chain, to provide added strength for your rain chain.

    • 3

Thread a piece of wire from the top of your chain to the bottom, weaving the wire through the center of each loop. This provides extra strength.

    • 4

Remove the downspout from your gutter.

    • 5

Slip two binder rings onto the gutter clip, then fit the gutter clip into the opening left by the removal of the downspout. Fasten the rest of the rain chain to the binder rings.

    • 6

Stake the bottom of the rain chain to the ground.
