How to Make Your Own Window Platform Bird Feeder

Watching birds feed at a feeder is one of the simple joys of life. Usually feeders sit or hang a good distance from the window where you watch them. Sometimes binoculars are necessary to get a good glimpse of them, or a good substitute is a zoom lens on your camera. But you can't always lay your hands on either one when you need them fast. Build and mount a window bird feeder outside your window to enjoy bird watching up close and personal.

Instructions

  1. How to Make a Window Platform Bird Feeder

    • 1

Attach a strip of pine board the width of the outside frame of the window to the frame.

    • 2

Screw the L-bracket to the strip of pine so that the part that juts out at a right angle from the frame is at the top.

    • 3

Screw the 1-inch-by-4-inch, 12-inch length of wood to the L-bracket jutting out from the window frame. Set the strip of wood on the bracket and, from below, stick a pencil through each hole of the bracket and mark on the wood. Take the electric drill and drill starter holes 1/4-inch deep. Place wood back on the bracket and turn in screws from below the bracket.

    • 4

Take the 12-inch-by-12-inch piece of plywood and drill intermittent drain holes through it with the electric drill. Nail each strip of the four 10-inch long flat pine molding to each side of the plywood. Center it so there is a 1-inch gap on each end. This assists in keeping the platform clean by allowing you to brush out old seeds and hulls.

    • 5

Paint the entire platform with waterproof sealer to help it last longer. Set aside to dry.

    • 6

Center the bird feeder platform on top of the 1-inch-by-4-inch, 12-inch length of wood screwed to the bracket. With a pencil, mark the position of drill holes on the board attached to the bracket. Drill holes. Reposition the platform on the bracket and insert screws from below the bracket and secure platform tightly.
