How to Refinish Bronze Plaques

Over time, bronze plaques can succumb to weather, oxidize and become dull and discolored. You can refinish a bronze plaque and help restore its former glory by properly cleaning and waxing it. Periodic and routine refinishing will prevent corrosion and ensure a high-quality appearance. You should refinish your plaques at least once a year. With a few simple tools and materials, you can refinish a bronze plaque on your own. For highly damaged bronze plaques, you may want to consult a conservator.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush dirt and debris from the plaque by scrubbing it with a dry, soft-bristle scrub brush. Use skewers to get any gunk out of narrow grooves and corners. Avoid touching the plaque with your hands, as the oils in your hands can cause further oxidation.

    • 2

Rinse the wood or stone that mounts the plaque thoroughly with water. This will help keep the wood or stone from absorbing the finishing substances.

    • 3

Clean the plaque by scrubbing it with a solution of water and nonionic detergent. Use 1 tsp. of detergent per gallon of water. Use your scrub brush or a scrub sponge to remove oxidation. Rinse thoroughly when finished. Allow the plaque to completely dry.

    • 4

Tuck and tape pieces of aluminum foil between the plaque and the supporting wood or stone to shield it from the wax.

    • 5

Use a clean cloth to apply a thin, even layer of wax to the plaque. Wear rubber gloves and a face mask. If you are using a non- or low-solvent based wax, add up to an equal part of a petroleum solvent, such as mineral spirits, to create a slightly soupier mix. Stir thoroughly with a stir stick.

Allow the wax to dry for 20 to 30 minutes. Buff the wax with a clean, dry cloth. Apply heavy pressure, and rub for several minutes until you achieve a lustrous finish. Finish off the buffing with a shoe-shining brush. Apply a second coat of wax if necessary.
