How to Build Martin Gourd House Poles

Adding a martin gourd house pole to your garden is a quick and rewarding project. Since martins are helpful birds they are welcomed in any garden. They feed on flying insects and have an appetite for mosquitoes. Gourds are ideal
homes for martins and are decorative additions to a yard.

  • Square wooden pole
  • Metal fence post
  • 3-inch screw eye
  • 4foot rope
  • Gourd birdhouse

Instructions

      Choose a location for the pole away from preying animals. The bottom of the gourd must be from 6 to 10 feet above the ground once lashed to the pole.

      Fix the 3-inch screw eye at the center of the very top of the wooden pole. Drive a metal fence-post spike into the ground. Work the pole into the spike. Use a level to ensure the pole is vertical and make necessary adjustments.

      Tie one end of the rope to the neck of the gourd. Loop the other end of the rope through the screw eye and attach it to the gourd's neck using a double half hitch knot.
