Choose a location for the pole away from preying animals. The bottom of the gourd must be from 6 to 10 feet above the ground once lashed to the pole.
Fix the 3-inch screw eye at the center of the very top of the wooden pole. Drive a metal fence-post spike into the ground. Work the pole into the spike. Use a level to ensure the pole is vertical and make necessary adjustments.
Tie one end of the rope to the neck of the gourd. Loop the other end of the rope through the screw eye and attach it to the gourd's neck using a double half hitch knot.
