How to Paint Cement Outdoor Figurines

Outdoor areas can become whimsical, magical places with the addition of painted cement figurines. Paint new figurines or paint your existing figures for a splash of color. Treat the surface of the statues like a paint-by-number project for easy application. Single colors with a touch of metallic or antique colored highlights can give further definition to the figures curves and shape. Place your completed figures as singles or in groups for added interest.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with a clean figurine. Pressure wash the statue for a quick cleaning and to remove flaking paint, oil, wax and dirt. Scrub with a little bit of bleach and water to remove algae or moss and allow to dry for several days.

    • 2

Place the statue on a drop cloth.

    • 3

Paint the figurine with a cement or masonry primer. Follow the manufacturer's directions for application and drying times.

    • 4

Examine the statue and decide what color(s) will be applied and where. Use painter's tape and a marker to label the color areas for multiple paint colors.

    • 5

Paint the figurine with patio paints or paint designed for exterior use.

    • 6

Seal the figurine with a cement sealer to prevent flaking, fading and weather damage.
